BETTY STUART BAIRD

Betty Stuart Baird lived a long and accomplished life.  Living through World War II and its hardships (including living some of those years in a coal mining camp and an orphanage).  She founded Panther Primitives in 1976.  After a 30 plus year teaching career (from a one room schoolhouse to her retirement from Beavercreek High School, in Ohio), she moved to West Virginia and built a log home with the love of her life, John D. Baird.

Her generosity was legendary, even though that sometimes made her a target for scammers, she didn’t let that deter her.  She founded the Native American Community Center, Inc. (non-profit organization) and operated Wadestown Food Pantry for surrounding communities.  She began Warrior Trail Pow Wow in 1998, which later was changed to Mountain Spirit Pow Wow and is sponsored by Native American Community Center annually, on the 4th weekend of August.  These accomplishments were her legacy and they live on through her sweet soul.

Betty authored 2 published books (“The Legacy of the Cowbird” and Undertaking at Riverside”).  She was a valued long-time member of the Mon County Solid Waste Authority which was integral to the development of the recycling and environmental programs.  She was a proud member of the Tomahawk Brotherhood for decades (they loved her, respected her and many called her “Mom”).

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Native American Community Center Inc/Wadestown Food Pantry to help continue her legacy, 1890 Range Road, Wadestown, WV   26590.

At her request her body was cremated, and their will not be any services.

The Tennant Funeral Home in Hundred, WV is in charge of arrangements.
